Volunteers in Education
Additional Volunteer Opportunities
JUNIOR UNDISCOVERED MATH PRODIGIES (JUMP)
is a new approach in math tutoring primarily aimed at lower income
children, as well as children with learning challenges. The program
was originally developed to help children in grades three to six
who have fallen behind in their math and need to catch up quickly.
JUMP tutors teach from customized manuals, which are carefully developed
to ensure the steps to every explanation are as simple and mechanical
as possible.

High School Student Success Program
In 2005-06 the Ontario government initiated the Student Success
Program within secondary schools as one response to the severe drop-out
rate of high school students. VIE has received requests from 9 high
schools to recruit community volunteers interested in providing
tutoring support (under the direction of teachers) to individual
students in their Math, English, Science or History Credit Recovery
Program. Most of these students, many of whom are new Canadians,
respond very well to working with a tutor on a weekly basis. We
are looking for volunteers who can help them focus, explain concepts
as they work, assist them in organizing materials, and provide encouragement
as they progress.
